It is a commonly known fact that soccer is one of the most played sports throughout the entire world. The most important competition of this sport is the Soccer World Cup. The process of qualifying for this event and all the preparations needed to be made never stop.

It takes almost four years of preparations and qualifying matches to prepare for the final stage of this competition which is over after one month of intense matches.

The fact that the Soccer World Cup is held every four years is a delicate subject for all the fans, soccer clubs and all those implicated in organizing this event. They would prefer if this four years period would be reduced. Their request is based on the fact that most of the other sports related world cups are held each year.

If you think about this it might really not be a too bad idea. Having the four years period reduced to 2 or at least 3 years would surely benefit everyone starting with the soccer clubs and continuing with the soccer fans and all the sponsors. Also the revenues that would be created through this tournament would at least be double the amounts that are being created by holding it once every four years.

This would also help the careers of the players and the fame of the soccer clubs because they would have the opportunity to meet their fans more often. There would surely be a great increase in the number of possible fans who watch this competition.

Why four years?

Lots of people think that having a Soccer World Cup every four years is a reasonable and necessary period because of all the preparations and the huge scale of this competition. Things are very complicated if you think about it because in the final stages only almost 30 teams play for the World Cup and this means a very big effort not only in organizing but also in taking care of all the aspects concerning the millions of fans who want to attend these matches and also those who watch it on TV.

The four years period is necessary because the selected country will have to make lots of preparations and in some cases even build new soccer stadiums from scrap to facilitate the hosting of the matches. If you look at other sports you will surely notice that the number of fans is slightly smaller than in soccer and this is how in those sports this kind of competition is possible every year.

For the 2010 World Cup in South Africa more than 200 soccer teams have competed to earn a place among the 32 teams that will play in the finals. South Africa automatically has a place among the 32 teams because it is the hosting country. The host country has always been relieved of having to play to qualify for the final act of the world cup.

If you look closely to the popularity of the Soccer World Cup you will see that the only events that match this event are the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. One of the similarities of these competitions is the fact that all of them all held once every four years and the reason is the same huge amount of preparations needed. While in the Soccer World Cup only 200 teams compete in the Summer and Winter Olympic Games the number of athletes in the qualifying stages can be well over one thousand.

Having a Soccer World Cup every four years can be a good thing because it adds to the determination of the players and teams and result in spectacular matches and number of fans. Four years is also a good period for those who organize it to prepare for this historic event.
